The MSCHF x INRI x Nike Air Max 97 'Jesus Shoes' allows the wearer to literally walk on water. A custom design conceived and engineered by Brooklyn-based creative agency MSCHF, the retro runner's Max Air unit is injected with 60cc of holy water, sourced from the River Jordan and blessed by a priest in Brooklyn. The pristine upper, constructed from blue-tinged mesh with white leather overlays, features a gold crucifix lace jewel and MSCHF branding on the left heel tab. 'INRI' is printed on the opposite tab (short for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, which was inscribed on the cross), while the lateral forefoot is marked with an allusion to Matthew 14:25, the biblical chapter and verse that references Jesus' feat of walking on water.

In celebration of Air Max Day, Nike hosted the Nike: On Air contest in 2018, giving residents the chance to create their own Air Max designs inspired by their hometowns. After working alongside Nike developers, winner Gwang Shin debuted his Nike Air Max 97 'Neon Seoul' sneaker in April 2019. Paying tribute to his city, Seoul, Shin draws influences from the famed neon signs in South Korea’s capital, decorating the leather upper with vivid-colored piping.

Released in April 2019, the Nike: On Air collection gave six contest entrants from around the globe a chance to develop an Air Max shoe influenced by their hometowns. Joining forces with Nike designers, Cash Ru created the Air Max 97 'On Air: Shanghai Kaleidoscope' sneaker. Gazing into the distance for inspiration, Ru's blue synthetic translucent upper is accented with white multi-layered heel tabs, emulating floating clouds that stretch across the Shanghai sky.

Released before Serena Williams' opening match at the 2018 US Open, the Serena Williams x Off-White x Air Max 97 OG 'Queen' features a light pink upper with bullet train-inspired lines on the sidewall. It also sports an integrated lacing system, black accents on the Swoosh and 'Air' lettering on the heel. A full-length Max Air unit sits in the midsole, surrounded by fuschia, purple and gold gradient accents.

The Travis Scott x Air Max 270 React ENG 'Cactus Trails' showcases the Houston rapper’s unique design vision on a non-retro silhouette. Nike’s lifestyle runner is treated to rustic tones, highlighted by a cream textile upper with tonal TPU overlays and a brown nubuck toe. The collar, tongue and eyestay are accented with subtle pops of color, while the midsole gets a rough-hewn look, thanks to a crudely painted yellow finish that extends to the visible 270 Air sole unit. Debuting on the runway at Paris Fashion Week in June 2018, the Off-White x Air Max 97 in black sees Virgil Abloh outfit the retro runner with a translucent textile upper. A white Swoosh and 'AIR' lettering adorn the lateral side, while the quarter panel on the medial side is printed with more lines of Virgil's signature text. The shoe's reconstructed look is finished with a woven Nike tongue tag pushed to the side.

The shoe features a retro-inspired multicolored corduroy upper with corduroy pull tabs, Velcro tongue patches, and an Infrared Air unit.
